"I really thought that the pain in my shoulder was going to last my whole lifetime. In two
sessions you not only educated me as to what was happening in my shoulder, you relieved
the shoulder pain itself. I can now work and not be in pain or on pain medication. Thank you.
I will never forget this."

Massage Therapy
FOR STRESS REDUCTION AND INJURY TREATMENT
|
| |
| How Can Massage Help? |
|
 |
The foundations of healing are intricately and profoundly present in touch. Massage is one of the
oldest and most effective forms of therapy and it was recognized in ancient times to aid in relaxation
and health maintenance. With the ever-increasing stress in today’s hectic lifestyles our bodies suffer.
Toxins get trapped in our cells and our system begins to break down. Massage helps to replenish
nutrients and oxygen to cells and tissues while removing waste and reducing stress. It literally "renews"
our bodies and allows for easier movement and a deeper sense of self. Managing your stress with massage
can allow for greater energy and a reduction of stress-related disorders such as depression, anxiety,
muscular pain, chronic aches, persistent infections, headaches and insomnia. Massage quiets the nervous
system and relaxes the mind, which leads to improved emotional and mental health. With regular massage
one can begin to relax and let go of stress...thereby leading a more productive, healthier and peaceful
life.
The Pilates & Movement Center provides an oasis where people can find a refuge from
the busy lives they lead. It is our belief that the nurturing and healing power of touch is the fundamental
basis of therapeutic massage and all of our services incorporate this core philosophy. Make Massage
Therapy is an essential part of caring for yourself in today's busy world. When massage is incorporated
into your lifestyle, it lowers blood pressure, increases circulation, realigns our structure, and eases
us back into a state of inner and outer balance. Massage is a natural compliment to movement lessons.
Each of our therapists are highly trained, state licensed and offer a variety of therapeutic massage
specialties. Ranging from light & relaxing Manual Lymphatic Drainage and CranioSacral techniques, to
energetic & spiritual Lomi Lomi, rejuvenating Thai Yoga Therapy, structure-oriented Onsen™ Manual Therapy,
and specific injury treatment work (rotator cuff injury, carpal tunnel, whiplash, car accidents, low back
pain, etc.). |
| |
| How Can Massage Treat My Injury? |
|
Whether you have an acute muscle injury or a chronic, aching injury massage can help. Your therapist
will be using different techniques to stop spasming muscles, stretch and realign muscle fibers and fascia,
break up scar tissue, release old trigger points, and remove waste and debris from injured muscles. This
will allow new blood to circulate; bringing in fresh oxygen to cells and tissue. All of this speeds the
healing of the damaged muscle while relieving pain and discomfort.
In addition, your massage will enhance circulation, relax the nervous system, improve joint function
and flexibility, improve lymphatic flow and give you a sense of well-being.

Regularly Scheduled Massage — More Than Just a Luxury |
|
Massage is a necessity. Studies done in 1958 (and replicated ever since) by H.F. Harlow and R.R. Zimmerman have shown that infant monkeys valued tactile stimulation more than they did nourishment. These researchers found that these infant monkeys would literally rather die than give up the tactile stimulation given by a stuffed soft monkey that gave out no milk, versus a mechanical wire-mesh monkey that gave out nourishment only in the form of milk. And so too the human body needs touch as much as it needs oxygen, water and food to survive.
At the very least, your body needs regular maintenance like a car. Massage can provide the fuel you need to keep you going and stay healthy.

| ONSEN™ MANUAL THERAPY (90 mins) |
| |
Onsen is a Japanese word meaning at rest or at peace. It is a state of mind, but can also be a state of body. Developer Richard Phaigh translated it to mean balance, particularly length and strength balance in soft tissue, to form the basis of this new protocol.
Onsen Manual Therapy includes three key components - muscle energy technique, post-isometric relaxation,
and transverse friction massage.
Muscle Energy Technique is a means of manually assessing imbalances and distortions in the skeletal system and correcting them, via the soft tissue, using a tiny amount of the patient's own energy (force) applied in a specific direction. Extremely gentle, MET provides dramatic and lasting improvements in flexibility, muscle tension and comfort.
Post-isometric relaxation works with the natural laws of the body. When a muscle has been actively contracted, the nervous system responds with an appropriate level of relaxation when the muscle relaxes.
Transverse friction massage works to break up scar tissue and adhesions that may have formed during an injury or repetitive use injury. Frictions help restore elasticity and increase blood flow to the area being worked. This helps to remove waste products, toxins, and bring in fresh nutrients, blood and oxygen to an area promoting healing.

| LYMPHATIC DRAINAGE (90 mins) |
| |
Manual Lymphatic Drainage (MLD) was developed by the Danish physiotherapist Dr. Emil Vodder in the 1930s; today there are five recognized schools. MLD involves light, rhythmical massage that aids the body in collecting and moving lymphatic fluid, which plays a key role in delivering nutrients, antibodies and other immune constituents to the tissue cells of the body and removing debris such as toxins, cell waste and dead particles which are then cleansed by clusters of lymph nodes. MLD also works on the nervous system, lowering blood pressure, reducing stress and improving sleep patterns.
The tissue fluid, or prelymph, can become static due to toxic or mucus overload, a blocked lymph passageway as a result of surgery or injury, or certain congenital problems. This leads to the puffy appearance of certain parts of the body, a slow healing process, and problems such as allergies, headaches, sinusitis, low energy and frequent infections.
A condition for which MLD has proved to be particularly effective is oedema (water retention) and, in its more serious form, lymphoedema - severe swelling of a limb or body part - which can lead in turn to cellulitis.
Schedule a session to speed your healing, or to experience the relaxing effects of MLD. Sessions also include an educational component so you can continue to care for your lymphatic system at home.

| TRADITIONAL HAWAIIAN LOMILOMI (60 or 90 mins) |
| |
|
Lomilomi is a spiritual, ancient Hawaiian massage technique passed on through family generations by either the kupuna (elders) or kahuna (keepers of the secret). This treatment begins with a pule (prayer) in the Hawaiian language and employs the use of forearms, hands and elbows to create a rhythmical and fluid euphoria, like gentle waves moving over the body. The long fluid strokes of Lomi Lomi also help to free the flow of life-force energy (“Mana” in Hawaiian, “Chi” in Chinese, or “Ki” in Japanese), making the muscles and tissues of the body soft, and promoting circulation and relaxation in the recipient. According to Huna philosophy, energy can also get blocked in the joints. Light passive stretches of the body with gentle rotations of the joints and rocking of the limbs are incorporated to assist the release of holding patterns and assist the flow of energy. Some practitioners of Lomi Lomi also chant or hum prior to or during a session as the vibrating and amplified energy that results also aids the release of blockages.
Hula movements, combined with the chant or hum of the practitioner, are also important and integral aspects of Lomi Lomi. The movements are all important to assisting the energy flow both within the therapist and recipient and helps keep the energy at a high level. This combined with breathing techniques by the therapist are also important in assisting the energy flow.

| THAI YOGA THERAPY (The Lazy Person's Yoga) (90 mins) |
| |
Thai Yoga Therapy is a healing art form over 2500 years old, which uses
passive yoga stretches (asanas) and acupressure along energy lines of the body.
Thai Yoga Therapy restores and balances energy; opens and frees the joints,
muscles, tendons, and ligaments; and brings peace and a relief from physical,
emotional, or psychological stress. It was developed by the Buddha’s personal
physician Doctor Shivago Komarpaj. Experience all the benefits of yoga, without
all of the work.
It is seen as a practical application of the Buddhist principle of “Metta” or
loving kindness, forming the cornerstone of a quietly effective healing of
body, mind and soul. Elements of Yoga and Ayurveda from India are combined with
universal energy healing principles, to harmonize and balance the flow of
energy throughout the body. It is performed with the client comfortably clothed
on a special mat on the floor. No oils or lotions are used. Sessions last for
at least 90 minutes and up to two hours.
Thai Yoga Therapy consists of a series of interactive, flowing movements,
stretches and rhythmic compressions (acupressure), along all the body’s energy
lines and pressure points. The often deeply meditative experience can result in
a profound release from mental and physical stress. The practice is
restorative, soothing and relaxing resulting in a similar “blissed-out” feeling
of a good Yoga class or a great nap.
Since this type of bodywork is done with very close client/therapist
interaction, it is, when done correctly, suitable for body types of all ages,
be they male, female, pregnant, healthy and fit, or tired and drained. The
practice is always tailored to suit the individual and personal needs of the
client. To fully enjoy the benefits of the massage, eat lightly or not at all
for 2 hours before the appointment. Dress in comfortable yoga or athletic style
clothing.
