The GYROTONIC EXPANSION SYSTEM® is a revolutionary system of exercise that incorporates key movement principles from yoga, dance, gymnastics, swimming, and tai-chi. Developed by Juliu Horvath, a former dancer and gymnast, Gyrotonic movement stretches and strengthens muscles while simultaneously stimulating and strengthening the connective tissues in and around the joints. The even and constant resistance in the specially designed equipment (the tower pulley unit) eliminates the jarring found in conventional exercise machines where most injuries tend to occur. Besides being popular with dancers, athletes, and anyone else that wants to improve their fitness and athletic performance, the  Gyrotonic® methodology has a huge following in the medical field. Because of the balanced approach, both disciplines are ideal for muscle, ligament and tendon recovery without sacrificing fitness.

In Germany, many physical rehabilitation clinics use the pulley tower as an integral part of their injury-prevention and rehabilitation programs. By increasing the functional capacity of your spine, in particular its ability to safely flex, extend and rotate, you'll be less prone to injury. And because the rotating wheels and pulleys encourage rotational movements, you'll increase the range of motion in your shoulder and hip joints.

Gyrotonic exercises have been extremely beneficial to people with arthritis. Marc Darrow, M.D., assistant clinical professor at UCLA School of Medicine notes, "As we age, the collagen in our ligaments and joints wears down. Gyrotonic training counters that by gently stretching the areas and bringing additional blood and nutritional supply."

Movements of the arch and curl series work to increase range of motion of the hips, back and shoulders, while the hamstring series opens the hips and even addresses the ankles with specific articulation of the feet. As all the movements in the system are non-impact and non-jarring, they are gentle enough for arthritic patients of all levels.

WHO IS JULIU HORVATH?
Juliu Horvath

Juliu Horvath was born and raised in Romania and grew up enjoying various sports including swimming and gymnastics. He began studying ballet aged 19 and was soon dancing leading roles with the Romanian State Opera.

Juliu defected in 1970 and eventually headed for New York to continue his dancing career with the New York City Opera, Radio City Music Hall and the Houston Ballet. After his career was abruptly ended by a ruptured achilles tendon Juliu began intensive yoga study and practice.

He deepened his knowledge of yoga and the inner workings of the body whilst living on St Thomas in the Virgin Islands. During this time he began to devise his own movement system. On his return to New York he began building a dedicated following at his White Cloud Studio and over time developed the equipment upon which the Gyrotonic Expansion System® is built.

Juliu is constantly developing his system further and his influence has spread rapidly around the world with Gyrotonic® exercise studios finding great popularity in many countries.
