Laura's Philosophy on Yoga...

At the heart and soul of Kona Pilates (and Yoga Flow Hawai'i) is YOGA. Yoga is meant to unite mind, body and spirit. Many yoga classes, in the US, are designed to give only your body a work out. Often ignored are the deeply meditative and spiritual aspects of yoga, which can serve as the path for our journey toward inner peace. Yoga Flow for Your Soul classes, as well as "Yoga in Motion" (GYROKINESIS®) help us return to the Eight Limbs of Yoga by focusing on more than just poses.

Yoga Flow for Your Soul classes teach us to quiet the mind and free the body and spirit of all that does not serve us. This rejuvenating, uplifting, yet moderate to vigorous yoga practice calms the nervous system while strengthening and lengthening the entire body.

Yoga Flow for Your Soul classes help us find forgiveness, healing and freedom. When we practice yoga we begin a journey of self discovery and with each small change we experience within, we "become the change we wish to see in the world" ~ Gandhi

FAQ: What are Yoga Flow for Your Soul™ classes like?

Each Yoga Flow for Your Soul™ class is a workout for mind, body and spirit and has several key components: music (to stir your soul), mantra (to work the mind as well as the body), mudra (to anchor how great yoga feels in your body), a sense of the sacred, breath work exercises (pranayama), chanting, focused intention, meditation, Yoga poses (asana), Yoga flows or Vinyasaenergy cultivation and movement, core strengthening, enhanced flexibility, improved posture, fun, a calm mind and a toned body, all held within the framework of grace and ease. This doesn't mean that it's easy!   I do believe, however, that suffering is entirely optional. I invite you to enjoy your Yoga practice as it is, rather than pushing, striving and suffering to match some idealized picture of what Yoga "should" be (after all, every body comes with a different owner's manual).

Classes are taught to music and evening Yoga classes are by candlelight

FAQ: I notice the studio has no mirrors. Why is that?

In my experience, I've found that many students of Yoga and Dance rely on what they see in the mirror to give them feedback about where their body is in space. And that is not necessarily a bad thing. However, many times students only learn alignment and timing (in the sense of dance) via the reflected images in the mirror. I also notice that many times students tend to "get lost" in the mirror. Or students tend to criticize how they look in the mirror. This is not what Yoga and dance are about. For me, I prefer that my students learn how to sense and feel what is happening in their bodies from the inside (the yogic concept of Prathayara - withdraw of the senses). Thus learning to rely on what they feel versus what they see. After all, the ancient Belly Dancers and ancient Yoginis didn't have mirrors and they all did just fine.

FAQ: Do you heat the room for yoga?

No. I do not teach "hot yoga." While I teach Yoga classes a warm room (about 80 degrees), it is my belief that movement and breath work together ignite your own inner fire naturally versus an artificially hot room igniting it for you.
